Le CD sorti en 2006, ’Home Truths’ (‘Les Quatre Vérités’) contient une trilogie sur le couloir de la mort. Engagé dans la lutte contre la peine de mort après la mise a mort d’Odell Barnes en mars 2000, sanctionnée, une fois de plus, par un certain George W. Bush malgré une pression médiatique et politique du monde entier, je suis rentré en contact par la suite avec deux détenus du tristement célèbre Polunsky Unit à Livingston, Texas. J’ai eu l’occasion de rendre visite à mes amis à deux reprises. Nous gardons toujours le contact et mon opposition à la peine de mort reste inébranlable. Grâce à des donations (souvent françaises) pour assurer une défense digne du nom, Michael a des vraies chances d’être disculpé du crime dont il est faussement accusé. Quant à Rickey, il finira certainement ses jours en prison mais on continue de lutter pour que sa sentence soit commuée. L’opinion public outre atlantique est enfin en train de reconnaître les inégalités et les injustices du système juridique d’un pays qui ne respecte aucune distinction entre culpabilité et innocence lors des procès souvent bâclés. Les américains commencent même à se poser des questions sur la justesse derrière ces assassinassions autorisées et ordonnées par l’état.

MICHAEL TONEY: Lors de son dernier procès, après une bataille acharnée pendant des années pour prouver son innocence,  Michael a été libéré en 2009. Il est mort dans un banal accident de voiture quelque temps après.

A part of the 2006 album ‘Home Truths’ is made up of a ‘Death Row trilogy’. I became involved in the anti-death penalty movement in 2000 after a certain George W. Bush ignored an international outcry (once again) and put to death a black inmate of

’ death row, Odell Barnes. This brought me into contact with two other residents of Livingston’s infamous Polunsky Unit, Michael Toney and Rickey Lynn Lewis and have visited them on two occasions. We are still very much in touch and my opposition to the death penalty remains as unshakable as ever. Thanks to private funding (much of it from France) there is real hope that Michael’s innocence will finally be proven and that he will be one of the lucky few who leave death row alive – and free. Rickey will almost certainly end his days in prison but his supporters are fighting to get his sentence commuted. The American public is at last beginning to take note of the inequality and injustices of a legal system which makes little distinction between guilt and innocence during what often amount to show trials and Americans are even starting to question the validity of state-authorized assassination.

MICHAEL TONEY: At his last appearance in court, after fighting for years to prove his innocence, Michael was finally freed from jail in 2009. He died shortly afterwards in a car accident.
